Definition: E85 is an alcohol fuel mixture consisting of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent unleaded gasoline. It is one of the most popular fuel alternatives to standard gasoline and much of the push to convert to E85 comes from the desire to end US dependency on foreign oil and help protect the environment from pollution from 100 percent gasoline.
Most ethanol produced in the United States comes from corn, but ethanol also could be made from wheat, potato wastes, cheese whey, rice straw, sawdust, urban wastes, paper mill wastes, yard clippings, molasses, castor beans, seaweed, surplus food crops, and other plant wastes. Cellulosic ethanol specifically defines the type of ethanol that is made up from crop wastes.
