Florida Gives Residents a Tax Free Holiday to Save Energy

From Jeffrey Orloff, About.com GuideOctober 8, 2006

Florida has made a point to give tax free holidays in the past. Each year, the state gives consumers a break on sales tax during a window that coincides with the start of school. Parents of school-aged children flock to local malls to buy computers, clothing, and school supplies during this time to take advantage of additional savings.

After the recent hurricanes that have hit the state, they have followed suit at the beginning of hurricane season giving residents a tas break on hurricane supplies. Again, residents have made use of the window of additional savings by shopping tax-free.

Starting on October 5th and ending October 11th, the state has granted an additional tax holiday. Flroida residents can now benefit from legistation that removes the sales tax on noncommercial purchases of new dishwashers, clothes washers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, light bulbs, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats and refrigerators that meet Energy Star standards and cost no more than $1,500.

It will be interesting to see how consumers react to this tax free window. The effort to promote energy savings is extremely noble, however the holiday does not coincide with any significant seasonal time period. It will be interesting to see what the effects of this program are and if any other states follow suit.
