The Greening of New Orleans

From Jeffrey Orloff, About.com GuideSeptember 4, 2006

Brad Pitt has grabbed quite a few headlines lately as a result of his newest project. No it's not the next box office smash, rather an effort to rebuild some of the New Orleans, Katrina devastated neighborhoods with energy efficient, green designs.

Pitt has teamed up with Global Green USA to rebuild areas like New Orleans 9th Ward with homes that discourage the consumption of non-renewable resources; redevelopment that will help lower their dependence on fossil fuels and their byproducts. The social responsibility of a project such as this is tremendous, but how does this building philosophy effect the local residents? By saving them money on their energy bills.

After Katrina swept through New Orleans, the rest of world was introduced to the poverty stricken 9th ward. Global Green USA took on two challenges when they stepped up and agreed to help rebuild this area; climate change and poverty. Not only is the team of Global Green and Brad Pitt helping to raise rebuilding funds, but the innovative, energy-efficient designs that are being put into place are estimated at saving residents money by decreasing the homes' operating energy use by 50 percent to 60 percent compared with traditional homes.

It is estimated by the US Green Building Council that 36% of total energy use, and 65% of electricity consumption comes from buildings (homes, apartments, retail, office, and commercial space, etc.). By introducing green housing on a large scale such as this rebuilding project, energy saving design will be cast into the spotlight and hopefully be taken into consideration on future projects both in small and wide scale.
