Preventing Blackouts
Wednesday August 9, 2006
I recently read an article in the San Jose Mercury News where a concerned reader asked how he or she could help save energy during the hot summer months to help prevent blackouts. I was impressed by this because most of what I have been writing about deals with saving energy to help relieve the financial burden of excessive energy bills. With gas prices averaging $3.035 according to the AAA fuelgauge report, and with the average cost of energy (per kilowatt hour) coming in at 10.31 cents (up one cent per kWh since last year) most households are looking to save money by saving energy.
Seeing people look to energy savings as an act of social responsibility truly strikes at what we should be concentrating on. This one reader's efforts to prevent local blackouts in an already stressed power grid, will be read by many. Hopefully, the readers on this site will also have the chance to see what can be done to prevent a strain on their local power grids as well.
